The most common cause of automatic transmission failure is heat. Reducing the heat that builds up during normal operation of your transmission will prolong the transmissions life.
Here are a few simple things you can do to help reduce transmission heat and keep your transmission working longer.
1. Adding a external transmission cooler has many benefits. If you travel a lot in extremely hot temperatures or carry a lot of weight in your vehicle an auxiliary transmission cooler is a great way to reduce heat and add miles to your transmission’s life. Reducing transmission heat improves overall transmission performance.
2. Keep the vehicles Cooling System in Good operating order increases transmission life. Your vehicles radiator provides cooling for the engine and automatic transmission. Heat damage occurs in the transmission long before the engine appears to overheat. Regular cooling system service can help your vehicles engine and transmission operate cooler and last longer.
3. Avoid Hard accelerations they create a lot of friction and heat in the transmission. Take it easy on the gas and the transmission will last longer.
4. Most of the friction and wear in the automatic transmission takes place during the shifts. Know when the transmission shifts normally. Then just before the transmission shifts back off the gas just a bit. This reduces the load on the transmission clutches and eliminates much of the friction during the shift.
